I am Antonia Kollyrou, a teacher of philology, and I studied Ancient Greek Literature at the University of Patras in Greece.

I teach ancient Greek or philological subjects in modern Greek (literature, history, language, syntax, the Greek arts and culture and others) to pupils and university students of other nationalities:

  • either because they need extra tutoring during their school or university studies,
    • or because they love Greek civilisation and are interested in studying the Greek language and the essential wisdom of the world’s greatest philosophers (Plato, Socrates, Aristotle, Pythagoras, Thales, and others).

I am able to communicate with children effectively and have a deep appreciation for ancient Greece and the classical values it promotes worldwide, the Greek philosophers, the arts, the theatre, teaching through new tropes of expression to stimulate the personal development of the individual, multiculturalism and the melding of the modern with history and tradition.

My post-graduate studies in stage directing and ancient theatre testify to my ongoing need to incorporate into my teaching elements of expression, learning and growth through art, and to stimulate my students and introduce them to Greek civilisation, rather than merely transmitting sterile knowledge. It is no secret that the literary and poetic ancient Greek theatre is a part of the world's literary wealth, and its universally known Greek tragedians (Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides) are included in a number of school lessons in many countries.

I can help if:

  • You love ancient Greek philosophy and want to study the ancient Greek language and the world’s greatest philosophers.
  • You want to be accepted to a university and need tutoring in ancient Greek or modern Greek philological subjects (literature, history, syntax, Greek arts and civilisation, etc.).
  • You need some knowledge of ancient or modern Greek to embark on your post-graduate studies, further your education in a particular field or achieve a higher level of competence, or for another scientific or business purpose.
  • You are a student in another country and are taking Greek philological classes at your school as a foreign language and you are having trouble understanding so you can delve deeper.
  • You want to travel to Greece and need to sharpen your child’s language skills so he can be more easily integrated into Greek culture and achieve the necessary mutual cultural understanding.

I have a thirst for knowledge and have worked in Greek formal education for many years as a teacher of philology as well as teaching children of other nationalities. I am fascinated by ancient Greek civilisation and classical literature. I place great value on my work with children and I enjoy being a citizen of the world and teaching an appreciation for diversity in every way possible.

I am available and would love to meet you and teach you what the Greek language and ancient Greek spirit can communicate.

  • I met philologist Antonia Kollyrou in December 2012 at the 16th Middle School in Patras where I was headmaster.
We enjoyed an excellent working relationship. She is very knowledgeable in the subjects she teaches.
She shows keen interest in keeping up with developments in the subjects she teaches as well as the laws that govern teaching,
examinations and the functioning of the school.
Her relationships with students are guided by a pedagogical approach.
She makes no distinctions; all students are treated equally, regardless of race, gender, religion or performance.
  • I met my teacher, Kollirou Antonia, during my vacations in Greece in summer of 2018.
Then we had our first lessons and we continued our sessions on line.
She taught me ancient Greek, we ran together through some texts of Plato, Aristoteles, Aeschylus and Sophocles.
With her help and my studying I managed to be accepted in the University of Oxford in the department of Classical Studies.
  • After an accident I had, I suffered from slight amnesia.
My doctor recommended to study ancient Greek grammar in order to improve my condition,
so I took the decision to visit Greece for three months and to take some lessons.
There I met my teacher, Kollirou Antonia.
We had lessons every day sharing till the end the same passion for ancient Greek culture and language.
